St. Avalo was started by a couple of US immigrants (Jill and Geir Ramleth). They first came to the Santa Ynez Valley in 2007 and fell immediately in love with the area. They bought a property, built a home, and prepared the ground and planted a vineyard.
The grapes and wines are grown and made by experienced staff who has been in the wine industry for many decades. The art of growing exceptional grapes combined with excellent winemaking make these estate wines unique. All grapes are grown with organic farming as a principal. This relatively young winery enjoys a wealth of experience by seasoned partners and staff from the Central Coast and Napa Valley.
As the vineyard matured and the wine became ready for the public, their son and daughter-in-law (Oliver and Diana) took on the challenges related to marketing and sales. The wines are mostly sold to restaurants, international export and Direct-To-Consumer (DTC) through it tasting room and website.
The brand name St. Avalo was originally Javaloe. The original name was created from the fact that Geir in Old-Norwegian means a javelin. Jill is an avid gardener and is especially fond of aloes. So, the name became Javaloe (jav + aloe). After some market research (asking lots of friends) it was determined that Javaloe was too hard to pronounce so it was abbreviated to Avalo only and the addition of St. was decided to round out the overall brand name. The brand mark of the trident is an artistic liberty of using that as a symbol for the javelin.
